E&O vs. General Liability

Professional Liability vs. General Liability: Know the difference.

One protects you when your work causes a client financial harm. The other protects you when your operations cause someone physical harm. Most businesses need both — here’s how to tell them apart.

What’s not covered by Professional Liability

Professional liability insurance (also known as Errors & Omissions or E&O insurance) is designed to protect you against claims arising from your professional services, advice, or expertise — things like mistakes in your work, missed deadlines, or allegations of negligence in the services you provide. But it’s important to understand what professional liability insurance does not cover.

Bodily Injury & Property Damage Are Not Covered

Professional liability insurance does not cover claims involving bodily injury to any person or physical damage to tangible property. If a client, customer, or third party alleges that your business operations caused them physical harm or damaged their property, that claim falls outside the scope of a professional liability policy — even if the injury or damage occurred in connection with the professional services you were providing.

Professional liability is specifically limited to financial losses resulting from errors, omissions, or negligence in your professional work — not physical harm or property loss. These types of claims require a separate Commercial General Liability (CGL) policy.

Claims professional liability does NOT cover:

A client trips over equipment in your office and breaks their wrist

A delivery to a client’s location results in damage to their property

Someone is injured at your place of business during a meeting or consultation

Your business operations cause water damage or fire damage to a neighboring property

A product you sell or recommend causes physical injury to the end user

Your signage or display materials fall and injure a passerby

Other common professional liability exclusions:

Intentional or criminal acts

Deliberate wrongdoing, fraud, or dishonest conduct

Employment-related claims

Wrongful termination, discrimination, or harassment (requires EPLI)

Cyber breaches & data loss

Unauthorized access to client data or security failures (requires Cyber Liability)

Workers’ compensation claims

Injuries to your own employees that occur on the job

Auto-related incidents

Accidents involving business vehicles (requires Commercial Auto)

Why this matters

If your business interacts with clients in person, operates out of a physical location, or involves any activity where someone could potentially be injured or property could be damaged, you likely need both professional liability and general liability coverage to be fully protected. Professional liability alone leaves a significant gap in your coverage.

Professional Liability (E&O) vs. General Liability

These two policies protect you against very different types of risk. Confusing them — or assuming one covers what the other does — can leave your business dangerously exposed.

Professional Liability

Errors & Omissions (E&O)

Protects against claims arising from the professional services, advice, or expertise you provide to clients.

The risk it protects against

A client alleges that something you did — or failed to do — in your professional capacity caused them a financial loss.

Trigger

An error, omission, or act of negligence in your professional work.

Common claims

A bookkeeper makes a calculation error that costs a client thousands in tax penalties

A consultant provides strategic advice that leads to a failed product launch

A medical billing specialist submits incorrect codes, resulting in denied claims and lost revenue

A graphic designer misses a deadline, costing a client a major campaign opportunity

An IT professional’s software recommendation leads to system failures and business downtime

General Liability

Commercial General Liability (CGL)

Covers claims involving bodily injury, property damage, or personal and advertising injury from your business operations.

The risk it protects against

Something related to your business operations or premises causes someone physical harm or damages their property.

Trigger

An accident, incident, or operational event — not a professional service failure.

Common claims

A visitor slips on a wet floor in your office and is injured

You accidentally damage a client’s office while setting up equipment on-site

A piece of your signage falls and injures a passerby

A competitor sues you for making false claims in your advertising

Your operations cause water damage to a neighboring business’s property

Do I need both?

In most cases, yes. If you provide professional services and you interact with people, operate out of an office, or visit client sites, you have exposure on both fronts. Think of it this way:

🧠

Professional Liability

Covers what comes out of your brain — your advice, your work, your expertise. When your professional services cause a client financial harm.

🏗️

General Liability

Covers what happens in the physical world — accidents, injuries, property damage. When your operations cause someone physical harm.

A professional liability policy won’t help you if someone gets hurt. A general liability policy won’t help you if a client sues over the quality of your work. Together, they form the foundation of a complete business insurance program.
